The Food Industry

As of the new millennia, anything is possible and everyone has an access to everything. Different advances in technology are booming. Researches on ways or inventions that will perhaps ease the human life are well-funded. However, all of these bear both positive and negative outcomes. As of today, as our society advances, the health of the consumers is sometimes left behind. The competition between food industries and companies is so rigid up to the point that they prioritize the taste over the nutritional value of it. For the past decades, many food industries produce unhealthy food which is known to be related with the rampant rate of obesity among their consumers. This is a global problem and the only way to solve this is to tap the government and call them to provide policies and laws that would assure that the food being produced by any different food companies is of high-quality and has nutritional value.

One of the known unhealthy foods that are widely distributed to any market are junk foods. It is defined to be any fast foods which are easy to prepare and easy to consume. These foods are known to have low nutritional value and add merely lying fat in the consumers causing ill effects of their health. Further, junk foods contain high level of refined sugar, white flour, trans-fat, polyunsaturated fat salt and numerous food additives such as tartrazine, MSG or monosodium glutamate but lacks protein, vitamin and fiber contents. Many are fond of eating junk food since it has good taste and it has a long shelf life wherein refrigeration is not needed. With these characteristics, junk foods are known one of the major causes of obesity (Rajveer and Monika, 2012).

People who are fund of eating junk foods are expected to be unhealthy and obese. These are due to the junk foods’ high fat content, high salt content, and high sugar content. Firstly, junk foods like burgers, pizza, fried chicken and chips contains large amounts of saturated fats. If the too much saturated fat is taken up by the body, the fat metabolism of the body will be unable to burn them which cause it to deposit as adipose tissues in the body. In time, all of these fats will accumulate will cause people to increase in weight, obese and overweight. Health risks like myocardial infarction diseases and heart failure are caused by obesity (Rajveer and Monika, 2012).

Aside from high fat content, junk food also has high salt content. In our everyday lives, we already get salt from bread, cereals and biscuits. Therefore, the salt that one get from the junk food are already in excess. According to a study, every extra gram of salt that a person eats for each day will increase their risk of obesity by around 25%. Of all the content of the food, salt seemed to be one of the major contributor in a person’s weight gain. A study shows that the urine of obese people contain higher concentration of salt compared to normal weight people, thereby for every extra gram of salt increases the chance of getting heavier. However, intake of too much calories remains to be the main cause of obesity (Spencer, 2015). Lastly, junk foods like soft drinks, biscuits, cakes, and cordial contains very high concentration of sugars that makes them taste good but make people fat and tooth decay (Rajveer and Monika, 2012).

Regardless of age, junk food is really popular that they have good tastes which are known to be due to the oils, salts and sugars that they contain. A study proved that people who are addicted in eating junk food tend to forget healthy foods while eating a junk food. With this factor, food industries and companies used sometimes, exceed the sugar content of their products for it to be more palatable to the consumers, thereby increasing their profits. However, adding more sugar will cause obesity to the consumers. In 2010, records showed that 3.4 million deaths are related due to obesity and overweight. World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that 1.9 billion people in the world are overweight and 600 million of them are considered obese. This is equal to the 13% of the whole global adult population.

People become obese when the energy intake from food and drinks is way greater that the expenditure through metabolism. The major source of excess energy is unhealthy foods like sugar-sweetened junk food (i.e. soft drinks). They are related to weight gain since they provide unnecessary source of calories and with no nutritional value. In the year 2010, WHO conducted a research which can prove the direct linkage between sugar intake and the body fatness. Results showed that intake of sugars are a determinant of weight in a normal people who consume ad libitum diets. The data suggests that the body fatness changes when a person intake excessive sugar which causes an alteration in energy balance rather that a metabolic consequence of monosaccharides and and disaccharides. Moreover, Scientific Advisory Committee in Nutrition (SACN) proved that consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages causes weight gain and an increase in Body Mass Index (BMI) in children and adolescents as compared to non-calorically sweetened beverages ("Sugar and obesity”, nd).

Sugar is known to make food and beverages even more tasteful and palatable, therefore many food companies are increasing the amount of sugar (higher than the prescribed amount) in their products. However, what they did is that they used other terms of sugar and indicate it in their food labels. The other terms used which are all synonymous to sugar are anhydrous dextrose, brown sugar, cane crystals, cane sugar, corn syrup, corn sweetener, crystal dextrose, fructose sweetener, high-fructose corn syrup, honey, maple syrup, molasses, and white sugar. All these sugars are disaccharides which are termed fructose, lactose and maltose. In the body, these sugars are metabolized into monosaccharides which are the main chemical for ATP-making which gives the body energy (Brown, nd).

In a human diet, the added sugar causes different diseases and if become severe will cause death. Diseases that are related to excessive sugar consumption are non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, metabolic syndrome and diabetes.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver is the term used for a wide range of liver diseases that are caused by little or no alcohol. It is characterized by too much fat in the liver. The main cause of this disease is obesity, insulin resistance, high blood sugar or hyperglycemia and high levels of fats (ie. triglycerides) in the blood. These deposits high amounts of fat in the liver. For some cases, the excess fat acts as a toxin to liver cells. This causes inflammation and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis which may lead to scar tissue or fibrosis in the liver ("Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease”, 2016). Further, too much sugar can cause metabolic syndrome and diabetes. Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages which includes soft drinks, iced tea, and energy and vitamin water drinks, aside from causing obesity, caused metabolic syndrome and diabetes 2 (Malik,, 2010).

Aside from new strains of viruses and diseases, obesity also affects the whole population in a large scale. The only way to reverse the growing obesity epidemic is for the government to introduce more regulations in the global market regarding the allowed sugar content of their products. WHO believed if the government become firmer in food regulations, it can lower the rates of obesity and thereby, reduce the risks of diabetes and myocardial infarction and the likes as long term effect. They should make policies that could give economic incentives to the growers to sell healthy foods while giving disincentives for companies who sell processed food and drinks. Also, there should be tighter regulation in advertisements of different fast food chains, especially those for children.

In conclusion, as time passed by food industry become greedier to earn more money while sacrificing the nutritional value of their food. To make their products more appealing they usually add more sugar to it. Additional sugar can cause consumers to be overweight or obese which can be escalated to different liver diseases, diabetes and even death. Therefore, the only way to reduce the obesity-related problems is that the government should make policies and food regulations that will encourage the consumers to eat more nutritional foods.
